I have been using HTML for a very long time now, probably close to 10 years but I feel that there is alot I still don't know (proper xhtml, dhtml). I have adapted css and am pretty comfortable with that, using solely css layouts and proper styling etc. I feel that sometimes I can still learn a bit more about using proper html for websites, perhaps some advanced techniques. Can you guys recommend any good books for advanced html techniques? I am not sure if the "reference" books are going to assist that much as they don't really teach, but anything else, thanks!

I used HTML Mastery which was quite in depth and advanced and I found that to be useful. It takes a look ahead at future web standards too which was interesting. Books aren't probably the best way to keep up to date with code as it constantly changes, but they are useful for grasping the basics and sometimes beyond

to be honest i don't see why anyone would buy books nowadays, most of the info you need it's on the web, whether advanced or beginning.

Although I do agree with you sometimes you do find better info in a book. Often the "free" info on websites isn't as in depth and doesn't quite teach as good as a book will, after all usually the authors who are offering up the info online aren't getting paid to do so and thus aren't going to be as descriptive, of course are exceptions to this.

Thats absurd, sorry.
Everybody has different learning styles and there is no replacement for being able to go grab the EXACT reference you need off the bookshelf and putting it in front of you. I use a lot of web references, but it's a pain in the patoot to constantly flip back and forth between my work on screen and another web page on screen -- and if you have to print a web site, you might just as well buy the book ! Web resources also tend to come and go, or get abandoned, but a book is always right there where you need it.

I also agree with Qwik3er.

DHTML .. well, it's an old term and older scripting model. Ajax has taken its place, unobtrusive scripting.

I am just confused by all of it at this point. I think I am going to go to the javascript ajax route and begin there!

The keyword in that post i made is I don't see why anyone would buy them, now i didn't tell him not to buy it or others not to. Like you said people have diff learning styles I just think if you can save some money then why not? The web is huge and im sure just like a bookshelf you can find the EXACT reference you need, hell i think even more than a bookshelf, don't you think?

I have been using 'The Complete Reference - HTML' by McGraw Hill publishing for years.... Not only is it an excellent reference book but it also is written as a tutorial.

I actually sat down and read the book before I started using it....

Don't use it much any more but when I get stuck on something strange or need to refresh my memory on something I've done in the past I always pull it out....

Really an excellent reference....

My suggestion is that you make a list of six different things you want to know, go to Barnes and Noble or Borders, get a cup of coffee and take three books to your table. Go through the books, look up your items and read their explanation - - choose the one that you think is written to your personal taste (the book, not the coffee) then order it from Amazon - - 40% off there you know....

One last thing, the 'Bible' series of books by Wiley is also excellent - - I use that series for Access and for Dreamweaver....
