Do viral marketing websites work?

Does anyone know if any of the viral marketing websites work? I posted a thread this morning but I guess the webmaster thought I was trying to spam and sell something. I just found this website called FreeViral.com which claims you can get up to a million visitors a day to your website. I posted this on my blog and already got 3 people to sign up. Their system basically works like a chain letter where you get at least 10 people to sign up. If you can get each of those people to signup 10 people as well the people they refer might get 10 or more people. The system really seems to make sense. If you find it interesting and want to try it out it would be awesome if you could sign up with my link below. I am not trying to spam and I am not trying to sell something. This system is free and I thought it might help some people get free traffic to their website.

It only makes sense to people who believe that getting visitors to your site who aren't actually interested in your content is a good thing. 1,000,000 people visiting your site merely to get some code is not a good thing.

I have to agree. With one of my first sites I tried viral marketing and thought it was great. I realised that my "visitors" were only viewing the homepage and not going anywhere else, and that got my thinking. I asked around a few places and done a little research and found that viral marketing provides you with unrelated traffic. I then decided I prefer to get related traffic and unrelated traffic so I stopped using viral marketing schemes.

Getting lots of traffic (random) to your site is really something But getting targetted traffic that has a higher conversion rate is what we should all be concerned about IMO

No! Those viral marketing sites are NOT worth your time. The 'visitors' that are 'browsing' your site are not there because they're interested in what you have to offer, they're there to get the code that they need.
Here's an article which further explains why viral marketing sites are a waste of time: http://www.tw3o.com/2007/05/23/what-...ffic-programs/

Agree with you. Traffic must be purposeful, not only for digits. That is the main rule.

"viral" marketing, sounds like something you catch off a toilet seat. Then you use someone else's toilet and they get it.
You used "viral" "chain letter" and "spam" in your post which didn't really put a positive spin on the idea for me.

I have a question: Is viral marketing considered blackhat SEO?

In a word, Yes. Look up the word "viral" and it is very simple really.
But the true Internet marketing Meaning of that "term" means different things to people.
I use a "viral" system that pays me to work form home... not retire, but live well. If the Viral marketing system is well put together--it will work. Keep the products fresh... and it will work!
Good luck...

How about viral backlinks via automated posts to blogs, message boards, etc? The get you the backlinks you need and bring in traffic who has read your entry and perhaps will come to buy...

How can you automate a response to something that is unknown? I mean a meaningful one.

It's been mentioned already, but I want to explicitly state that the garbage automated traffic the OP is talking about is not at all viral marketing. Please don't confuse the two.
The automated software is completely useless. Viral marketing is a form of marketing where the marketing is built into the product. You get the product in front of some influential people and have them begin it's spread. And due to the built in marketing and choosing the right market and the right initial people to get talking about it your product essentially spreads very quickly on its own to a large audience.

1,000,000 (legit) visitors in a day would make me raise my eyebrow, and think twice, trice, etc.

dancing_queen I'm not sure what you're asking. are meaning the automated traffic can be profitable for a black hat site? Or am I missing something?

I have customers who say that black hat (script based) message board posts, blog posts (trackback, etc) help them increase their backlinks, therefore increasing organic traffic, sales etc.
