Hi everyone!

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic! How do we get it? There are lots of possible ways to get traffic. All you need is to look at this list for your reference and check if you have done any of this yet.

Free methods:
Submission to SE's and directories
Article marketing
Email campaign
Forums, blogs and board postings
Social Bookmarking
Etc. etc.

Premium ways: (Should require a budget)
Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Targetted Link backs
Professional SEO services
Ad spaces
Offline campaigns
Etc. etc.

Random and unique traffic is good to any site but getting targetted traffic is what makes the difference. This kind of traffic yields the highest conversion which would determine your site's success.

Given a budget, I would always opt for PPC. PPC is a very effective way of getting targetted traffic given the proper treatment. Identify your niche and select the market you want to cater to and start from there. Research also on the keywords your desired market would most likely be looking for. IMO, one should be more focused on getting targetted traffic than just page views. Buying targetted link backs are also effective at getting targetted traffic. It really all boils down to what your site offers to your traffic

Another great way of targetting your desired audience is through forum posting on similar niche with your link on your signature. What I like about this forum posting is that it is totally free.

My question is : What methods do you use to draw traffic to your site? Random and targetted alike.

I just basically be myself on forums and leaving comments on people's blogs, and people either like what I have to say or think I'm a total idiot, but want to find out more either way.

In answer to your question we use (But not limited to) the Following:

Blogging
Community profiles
Link exchanges
Banner exchanges
Classified ads
Directory listings
Targeted Product/Service pages linked in your main site footer
guest books
Paid (PPC) - Pay Per Click, (PPS) - Pay Per Sale, (PPI) - Pay Per Impression, Etc....
Paid Banner ads, Listings, Submissions, Etc...
(SEO) Search Engine Optimization
And MORE!

We are more focused now days on Traffic Vs. Conversions rather than just mass traffic campaigns. While sure 1,000,000 hits a day is great, but heck they are just Hits. when you look at the math behind it & find that you have 1,000,000 hits at a 0.001% conversion (Meaning how many people Buy something out of the total hits that day), I would much rather have 10,000 hits at a 5.068% conversion rate (Granted the 5.068% is rather high in a realistic sense).

Not to Go totally off topic, I do like your Ideas as well.

Yeah me too. Scorpioagency said link exchanges, which tend not to provide good traffic, especially in the way they are abused. They can boost PageRank (for what it's worth) and sometime SERPs, but aren't a great way to get traffic into your site

Umm, Paid to Read? isn't that the same concept as one of those Traffic Exchanges where people just click through in order to earn points or cash & never pay attention to the content / theme of the site / e-mail they are viewing?

Seems a little bit of a waist of money for advertisers (The ones looking for traffic Vs. Conversions anyways). Personally I would rather get a targeted 100 visits with high Repeat / referral / Conversion rates rather than 10,000 general hits that come from unrelated sources & seem to leave my site within the first 2 seconds.

Thats my opinion anyways.

The SERP thing is very misleading at the best of times. At one time, it did help, but I've actually seen multiple cases where someone had five or more pages' worth of link exchanges, got nailed, and then when I removed the link exchange pages ended up higher than ever.

The logic behind link exchange, if you factor out SEs, is just silly. In exchange for traffic, you'll send traffic away. Sooner or later, you're going to send more traffic to someone than you'll get back. That's a losing proposition in my book.

I was kinda Generalized when I simply put "Link Exchanges"... To add to that seeing that its becoming a topic on this thread, If you are going to partake in a Link Exchange, make sure that the site you are exchanging links with is more predominant in its field.

No, it would not make any sense to exchange links with a site that receives a lower amount of traffic & has almost NO establishment in their industry.

Will you lose some of your traffic to your newly found exchange partner? Yes, eventually you will, its inevitable. I would suggest Non-direct competitive sites, your just cutting your own throat if you sell notepads & you exchange with another notepad seller.

Of course you will need to be somewhat similar otherwise they won't want to link to you. So if you ONLY sell notepads, look for a company that ONLY sells Pens or Pencils.

This also of course aids in your inbound link being more Targeted & not so generalized & pointless.

Well if they have more traffic than you, then they are losing traffic to you. It works both ways.

I do find that link exchanges tend to work well on a small scale when you are making local web sites - this is mutually beneficial as your web site can only provide a certain amount of information about something, and theirs would be complimentary.

For example, say you owned a web site about a local tourist attraction, and there is an official web site for the town it is in, it would make good sense for both to have each others links on their web sites as this would help the visitor find out more about the area etc.

However, in larger business, I tend to find many web sites swap links when they are selling things, with fairly unrelated sites, and this doesn't help anyone

Exactly, whym. The odds are that two sites won't have the exact same traffic levels, which means someone's bound to come out on the short end of the stick when it comes to link exchange.

The link from the town to the tourist site, and vice versa, makes sense because there's a legitimate organic reason to share the traffic. The visitor is looking for information about the town, and both sites provide different types of information about the town for the visitor.

The problem is that most link exchanges aren't about that. They're "hi, link exchange your PR4 site with two PR3 sites of mine" or something similar. That's what doesn't work, and that's what gets people burned.

I rely on forum posting, blog commenting, and article marketing. However, they really aren't doing the job as well as I need them to.

Announce some contests for bloggers. They will write about you and it will create buzz .... so more traffic, extra backlinks and more revenue. how's this idea?

Maybe you sould also take into consideration other premium ways of advertising your sites thru banners, text links, PPC, etc. These kind of promotion methods will give you faster results.

IMO, free promotion techniques can also be very effective. Done properly and consistently, it will bring in traffic to your site.

Generally, since I make my money through publishing PPC ads, it will cost more to pay for PPC advertising than I will get. Nonetheless, I've started advertising with Yahoo using a coupon, and I'm happy with the results.
