Can I get a drum roll for the right answer - or a boot in the butt for assuming LT is operating in America just because I am?

A trademark doesn't exist to protect your brand or business name, ironically. It's for consumer protection, to prevent people from defrauding customers whose trust you've earned. In practice..... A trademark is exactly what you need.
You also need to use the name for the protection to cover you. And before you do that, you need to do the obvious and make sure the domain you want is available, but you also need to do a fictitious business name search and application. If you operate a business under anything other than your legal name - Microsoft vs Bill Gates - you need to make sure you aren't stepping on someone else's trademark from the outset.
None of this constitutes legal advice. It was told to me by a lawyer and a few business people, but they could all be conspiring against me.
