I made an identical thread on another, similar forum asking this same question based on what I had read.

Basically I was wondering why I've seen less suggestions and/or comments about using Youtube and other video uploading sites as a promotional marketing tool. I know it exists, as I currently use it myself, but only because it relates to my niche.

My initial reactions as to why there are less suggestions were webmaster's:

- Don't know how to use software/hardware
- Form of marketing doesn't relate to business/website

I did not have the opportunit to read through this specific forum to see many of the suggestions, but I'm going to assume that I would find similar results. What are some of the feelings about using YouTube as a promotional marketing tool?

I'm no marketing guru but I've used Youtube to host a video tutorial that I link to on my site. It's got my site name watermarked on the video to advertise the site. Also, on my Youtube profile there's a link to my site.

This month there's been a grand total of .... 2 referrals from the Youtube link, but I've had 329 visits from people who typed the URL into the address bar. Did they get the address from the video watermark? I've got no way of knowing (because I can't be bothered using a tracking URL to display on the video).

This isn't a concerted marketing effort though, I'm simply using what I already had to slap my site name on and publish on YT. Also, it's a bit dry for viewing, hardly a glossy promotional vehicle that's going to coax people to 'buy a product'!

What are your thoughts KL? Have you done anything using Youtube?

I have a total of 10 videos with just under 15,000 views between the 10 of them.

More recently within the last 3 months I've been making more of an effort to use YouTube to generate more views by inserting the website logo at the beginning of all of my videos and inserting the URL at the end of the credits.

In that same period of time, I created 4 of the last 10 videos. Two of these videos now derive over a third of my views (one video in particular has 5000 of the 15000 views and a number of comments with no signs of slowing up).

However, I haven't checked the conversion rates from YouTube videos to my website traffic. I have been keeping a mental note of the new users that sign up to our website or send an email regarding a particular video. I think if I concentrate my efforts on finding out what makes a particular video more "successful" than others then I could generate a larger traffic flow from Youtube.

I'm also thinking about creating a username and profile that is directly attached to my website and submitting videos. Right now it is just my personal username. I think using this method gives more of a visual representation of your business, website, or product.
