Given the great response I received yesterday about link titles I'd like to receive some feedback on another subject thats been bothering me for a while now.

When we started our site we intended on sending out monthly newsletters to customers or anyone who was interested and signed up. We have a few thousand registered people signed up for our newsletter now but have never actually sent one out - part of me feels that newsletters scream SPAM, even if a customer has signed up for it.

My question then to those who send out newsletters, do you feel they offer any kind of value to your site? What percentage actually read the email, what percentage then visit your site, and do you notice any increase in sales/enquiries at all?

I suppose it depends on the subject matter of the site itself but some feedback would be appreciated. When you receive newsletters do you ever bother to open them, or do you instantly mark it as trash and think less of the company that sent it to you?

Your thoughts are welcomed

Depends on the client and situation. One of mine is going to rework his in the "offseason" (annual event that just ended) to make it a double opt-in, so that way it's all prequalified.

I feel they can offer value, but they have to be worded in such a way as not to be a sales pitch and more of a goodwill kind of thing. I find that most people (65-70%) will read a newsletter that they wanted to get. And I find that there are some immediate sales increases, depending (anywhere from 5%-100%). It's really a trial and error and a subject matter sort of thing.

My experience is that if the news letter is short!!!
then you can get good responses. the people wont read something which has
too much info in it. So myadvice is keep it short.
naturally it also has to interest them
