My favorite way is to actually recommend my affiliate link to a customer who has already bought something. Haven't had much luck just posting banners/links on my site.

I like to promote through my blog, but I make sure the products I refer my readers to relate to my blog's topic. Many times I place the link within my post. For example, if I'm talking about a book I read by a certain author, I'll place my Amazon affiliate link to that book, and I use the title of the book as my anchor text. This has brought me success.
