What am I doing wrong?

I have a magazine website that is not doing so well right now. It has a forum and an online community but both are failing miserably. I have tried every trick in the book and nothing seems to be working at all. I can't get enough traffic on the site. When I do manage to have people on the site, the feedback about the site and magazine are great; so I know it's not the content...people love it when they finally read/see it but its getting them to read/see it that's the challenge...I have at least 5 queries everyday from potential advertisers who want to advertise on the site and they want to know hits we get a day and i can't even take on ads because I dont have the hits. I am so fed up because I strongly believe in this magazine but can't seem to get other people to buy into it. I need ideas on how you build an online community and how to get traffic for your website...I am really reaching breaking point because it is now weighing heavily on me...

Any chance we can see the site. Every site is different and what works for one isn't necessarily the same thing that will work for another.

There are plenty of things you can do. You need to get the word out about the site and you need to get that word in front of the type of people likely to enjoy the site and stick around.

The people who like it, are they telling others about the site? If not why? Can you offer them some kind of incentive to promote the site on your behalf?

Forums can take awhile to build. There's a sticky here in the Internet Marketing forum with ideas for getting started.

The key is really to build a strong enough initial community who will then spread the word for you. Do whatever you can to keep your members coming back daily. You won't to hold onto them.

Don't think of it as tricks. It's hard work.

Start by adding a link in your forum signature here. No one can visit your site unless there's a link pointing to it. Add a signature in links wherever else you post too.

I don't know the topic of your site, but I'm sure there are blogs on the same subject. Leave comments on those blogs that add to the discussion. Become part of other communities and you'll find that people from those communities will also become part of yours.

Hi there

In general communties take a long time to take off, its easy to look at the myspace sites and see how well they are doing, but for the most part it takes years to create a good community.

So the most important thing you will need is patience, also keep your community up to date, add new things for people to do, keep building your site, if it is as good as you say, it will grow.

You have to keep the faith really, keep in touch with latest information your in the right place webmaster talk can give you lots of hints a tips.

Lots of communitys fail as people give up on them and stop building as they think its not going to work, in fact its just they havent been patient enough.

If your doing things right you should have a few people that are regulars and this will slowly build.

I personally would be honest with your advertisers, tell them you are still growing you might find that some of them will still advertise with you

Well for one thing not ans people here or not giving a link so as we can look at the magazine site.

And also make sure you do the Meta tags on all the webpages of the website and get them entered on to the variouse search engines (I.e Google)

Have you tried writing some articles about the same topic that your site covers? Write some short informational aritcles and submit them to the various article directories ( I use isnare.com, for only $2/article they submit them for you). Other websites will pick them up to use as content and you can gain alot of exposure that way. Plus all of the back links increases your search engine rank so you can gain some organic search engine traffic as well.

Make sure that you put your url in your "short bio" that is included with your article. Also develop a signature with that url and use it each and every time that you post.
