I feel that if my spanish were fluent i could not only get the word out better, but also customize keywords and phrases.

I wonder if advertisers wouldn't like the fact that I'd be getting more traffic from mexico. I wonder if they view traffic from mexico as worthless or what.

If your website is in the same language as the potential customers of course it's likely to convert better.

However having a multilingual website is NOTHING to do with SEO

You do realize majority of the people in Mexcio using the internet speak english anyways? Also, he is correct about bilingual having no "positive" effect on SEO, mixing languages throught your site can actually hurt your rankings.

Not quite what I meant

Having a site that is multi-lingual is marketing.

Thank you. Good point. I wish I could change the thread title from 'SEO' to 'marketing'

Interesting thing we've noticed is that if you use french/spanish text on a site, you can get Google Adsense ads in French/Spanish.

Haven't tried it with other languages, but it's interesting to know (not sure what the CTR or CPM is with them though)

One of my clients has been considering this for a while. At present his site is only available in the one language (english) though he is starting to receive a lot more orders throughout Europe.

He is considering having his entire store professionally translated (some 10,000+ products) into a number of languages. This would be a mighty task though as new products are added daily, he'd basically need some full time translaters :/

The alternative is only to translate necessary language files, words like Checkout, Buy Now etc Whilst it may be enough to pull in one or two extra orders I think it'll give the store an unprofessional feel - not translating product descriptions would look lazy.
