My TOP 10 promotion list. What is your top 10?
1. Search engines.
2. Forums and Message boards are a great way to promote your link. Just put the link in your signature.
3. Use Free Ad Boards. These are boards that you can post a text ad free for a pre-determined period of time, usually 5 to 10 days. Then your ad expires and you are emailed the option to re-post your ad free for another cycle.
4. Free classifieds are a fast and easy way for you to start marketing, especially if you're new to internet marketing. For eg. tumano.com, UsFreAds.com, etc
5. Pay per click (PPC) is now one of the most popular way to advertise in the Internet. Use Google Adwords, Yahoo! Sponsored Search, etc.
6. Social Bookmarking. Submit your links to social bookmark networks such as digg and del.icio.us
7. Use social networks such as facebook, myspace, linkedin, yuwie.com
8. Publish an E-Mail Newsletter. While it's a big commitment in time, publishing a monthly e-mail newsletter ("ezine") is one of the very best ways to keep in touch with your prospects, generate trust, develop brand awareness, and build future business.
9. Install a "Signature" in your E-Mail Program to help potential customers get in touch with you.
10. Write Articles for Others to Use in their Newsletters. One of the best means of marketing is by submitting articles to online article directories.
Nr.11 Register a domain and redirect the visitors.

I don't agree with number 8 because you would need to promote the newsletter just as much for it to be useful.

I only have three words to say in answer to this:
FOLLOW THE LEADERS.
What an incredible pile of drivel. Classified ad sites have become stuffed by idiots following "logic" like this and therefore don't work for anyone anymore, as have article sites and free ad boards.
Forums only work if you actually have something intelligent to say and can attract visitors based on your demonstration of a clue (something most of the link-obsessed crowd doesn't get.)
Social bookmarking/networks are going to get killed by idiots who treat it as a submission service/free one-on-one marketing opportunity. Unfortunately, even semi-major corporations are on this bandwagon so we just have to wait until they all get drunk and fall off.
Search engines. Okay...what? How? What do you do?
Email newsletter. Great if you have something to say potentially, lousy if you don't.

I'm going to follow Adam on this.
I'd also say, before publishing a list, look at your logs to see where people actually come from.
Let's take the link in a signature. Mine is there, I post to various forums and message boards. Those links get about 10-20 visitors a week. My link in my sig is more of an identifier of who I am. If posts are for traffic, it is a very very very weak payoff.
Using free classifieds is basically spam. no further explanation required
Social network/bookmark sites can be hit or miss. When they give you a lot of traffic, it tends to be low quality. However, if you have a topic of genuine interest or usability, then you might get good traffic. These work better when it's your visitors posting to them instead of you.
An email newsletter may help bring people back but, you have to get people to sign up in the first place. Most people hate them.
Online directories and article sites do nothing for traffic. They are a broken SEO scheme and do not bring traffic because nobody goes to those sites on purpose.
As many have said before, the best way to bring people to your site is to very regularly provide fresh, new, unique, useful content. Another thing that works is to provide useful online tools. Tools are good because your visitors promote them for you.
The other old adage, promote your site as if search engines did not exist.

OK who gave Adam that title "Seo expert.. what is SEO" v hilarious im still laughing. Lmao hehehehehehehe hehehehe ok trying to stop no i just cant hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Ok now on z comments... they are mostly moderatley valid... but oviously there is a debate on the line(s) between advertising/PR etc and spam. Lets face it most organisations promote themselves in some way or another, its all a matter of being intelligent about how you do this.

If promotion was the goal, and you invested more than 5 minutes in this thread and only received 84 hits, then it was a waste of time.
It's like these constant posts about submitting to directories. People burn up hours and hours posting to directories. For what? a dozen hits a week (if they are lucky)? Those hours could have been invested in something that could actually ad value to the site and to the visitors of the site (better content/tools/improved service/etc). Real value will attract people in the thousands/millions, not, just the dozens.

What are the differences between #3 & #4? I mean are "Free Ad Boards" & "Free classifieds" different things? How?

1. Multiple hot air balloons that spell out your URL over NY City (make sure you sepll it right).
2. Go on a date with a new person every night and tell your date about your website.
3. Print your domain name on toilet paper and then see if you can get local restaurants and malls to use it.
4. Sidewalk art.
5. Get a famous rapper to include your website in their songs (bonus points for getting the album named after it).
6. Have Microsoft integrate it into their newest proprietary software...you'll have millions of users locked in...a win for sure.
7. Get Oprah to forward it to her email list. That's worth at least 84 hits.
8. Submit it it to digg.com with the title-"I bet you can't knock my server offline".
9. Get someone in Dubai to make an island shaped like your domain name.
10. Create an endless loop that keeps your users on your website.
Nr. 11. Go back to the top of the list and repeat every step.
Just a little humor for the day.

I'm going to try and do this right...
1) Create original content (search engines like original content, and so do users)
2) Continue to add content to your website (creates return visitors)
3) Create a site that people will actually like (creates word of mouth)
4) Make sure your page passes this test. http://validator.w3.org
5) Give users a way to interact with your site (forums, comments, community building)
Well, those are my top 5. If you do those 5 things, the rest takes care of itself. Organic links will build, word of mouth will spread, return visits will occur....
If you are going to pay money, go with somebody reputable like adwords, or a large site that is reputable and in your niche. I still don't understand why people pay money to get listed in linkfarms.....

Good advice Keith - although validating through the W3C won't promote your site, following web standards helps with browser compatibility so more users can view your site properly.
If you're selling something, you've got to provide a quality service in the first place - this way you'll gain a good reputation. Word of mouth (or satisfied customers posting on forums etc.) shouldn't be underestimated - it can be an inexpensive and successful way to get a lot of new business. Forget all the spamming and "social bookmarking" blah blah blah - provide a quality service or quality content that meets the needs of your customers/visitors and you'll have a firm base to grow from.
