Newbie question - Anyone use opt-in e-mail lists to promote their site? If you bulk-mail members of an opt-in list purchased from a 3rd party, is this considered spamming, or is it legit and acceptable?

If it's legit, how do I go about choosing a reliable company to work with?

It is not considered "SPAM" if you send to a opt in email lead, You must also list a valid email address and be responsible with it,

Double opt-in lists are better for getting and keeping people on the list.

Be sure that if you buy a list that it is verifiable that it is opt-in. Also, you'll want to provide a way for them to opt-out when you send them email.

How does one go about finding quality opt-in lists? I know there's a lot of junk out there. Is there a forum or resource where people (not advertisers) discuss their actual experiences with opt-in lists, including reviews of different list providers?

Is it possible to buy lists containing only people within certain demographics (gender, age, etc.)? What is the average price for quality listings?

What kind of proof should I look for that the list is opt-in?
Will most ISP's permit bulk mailing to these addresses, as long as you can provide such proof?
