It depends on your niche. Have you seen how much busy "tickets for sale" section of craigslist? I posted ads on craigslist for several clients in the past who sold tickets. All of them told me they tried good adwords. Spending $100 on google adwords they even can't earn $20. Where as if they spend $100 for advertising on craigslist then they can earn several hundred dollars.

In most of the cases advertising on free classifieds is much more cheaper than advertising through google adwords.

Free classified sites like craigslist, backapge, kijiji, gumtree, olx, loquo are getting popularity very fast. One day free classifieds will be the main source of internet marketing.
