But by writing it the way you have, which technically is not accurate by the way, this thread has managed to get a ton of attention. It is even quoted in some really big sites.

What better way to get attention in a world where everyone's focus is search

I agree with vangogh, but many sites get their visitor from search engine

I agree with vangogh, but many sites get their visitor from search engine, according to me, first time, your visitors can come by search engines, but you must find methods for example add favorite etc. and second time they use explorer bar if they like your site.

I agree, changing your robots.txt file so that the search spider ends there will solve your problem. Though personally, I don't see why search traffic is a bad thing. Maybe that's just me though.

Katherina the issue wasn't about reducing your search traffic, but rather increasing other types of traffic so the overall percentage of traffic you get from search is less.

Before asking if I'm crazy, I don't mean number of visitors. I mean the percentage of traffic from search.
Once upon a time, 90%+ of my traffic came from search alone (99% of that was google). Now, I'm down to about 70% from search, though total traffic is up 300%.
I get a lot of traffic through other people's blogs, social network sites, etc. I'm working on new content but, new content always boosts my search ratings.
So, what do you guys do to get less search traffic?
|
I get around 60% from the social media. I do need to increase my search traffic percentage. Do you mind to tell me how you make it? maybe we shall exchange the idea....

on a purely pragmatic level, all this social marketing (and no differently, forum marketing) is not much of an alternative to search marketing if you are trying to avoid reliance on transient systems
word of mouth, getting your actual friends to spread it around, and more... these might be a viable and results-producing alternative? social networks etc is frying pan vs fire type thinking
what else have you suggested?
"links links" "quality content"...
hmm, it's so pre-2008 to see content as something intended for readers rather than Googlebot.
i like the cut of your jib man. but the moment I think about content, right, i start imagining (here's me, i'm so evil) what i can do that is thoroughly 'black hat'... like produce a dozen convincing pieces of rhetoric on how to lose weight, so fat people can sit in their chair and spend hours munching snacks and reading my delightful wisdom, and advertising anything i can to them, from weightwatchers to TESCO! i mean i could shove pics of chocs and food in their faces, right there on the pages they love reading, and with a few clicks some van can turn up with their food (hours later obviously)... that's pretty blackhat, because the content isn't real quality in the real sense of quality as used by, for example, robert pirsig.
but good content... can help me. i have a "Product search engine" aka a product finder. it's got a good heart - programming inside that means it's a marvellous machine and as it grows it'll help a lot of people choose good products, save money, know what's available etc. but all i have is the search engine and keywords.
i could create content that made the site more, that gave it pages which OTHER PEOPLE (forget the robots) may look at and go "cool, i like that" and link to it, or bookmark it, or share it with their friends on whatever the contemporary sharing platform is, be it their email, their text messaging service or some halfwit social site for digging things.
but also that other stuff i called blackhat can easily be excused as only really blackhat in its soul and not in any way that means i can't do it. i have a weightloss domain and the ability to talk a lot of ****e. i recently added some supermarkets to my repertoire of affiliated companies, so if i want to show fat people pictures of chocolate, jesus.. i can.
but it's a lot of work, now that i think about it. all that writing, page production, putting it up, and how do people find it anyway? i could do the blackhat part of the deal, disguise myself as joe ordinary and link to it on forums. i could spread the word myself. but then you're already undermining the real genuine links, because you've preceded them with all manner of phony ****e.
but content for my productfinder... that's 100% whitehat, and a good investment of time if what i believe in is that site as my future main income
reviews of consumer life. comedic, but for a family audience. a more rounded look at the whole sector that the site deals with. that seems to be a wise direction forward. when i get my next carton of cigarettes (which i cannot do my work without) i shall definitely apply that. hope i haven't gabbed too much. but i like this idea. and the thread was lacking in any concrete example of how the cow you proceed to do this great feat of getting 'known' on the web, rather than merely googled, or dugg, or linked.

I get confused on what you want: For me, search engine traffic is the best source of traffic. But WHY you want to LESSEN your traffic coming from SE? Any VALID reason???

Because then you won't be asking "My site disappeared from Google and all my income has gone. What can I go before I go bankrupt"

To MrCat,
According to Vangogh, in his post, he stated that traffic from SE might be out for some time due to changes in algorithms. And to avoid your site from having no visits at all, you need to diversify the source of your traffic. Meaning you don't rely on just one source.
A question for you, which do you want, an intermittent / sporadic high traffic for your site? or an average and permanent traffic?

Cool thread, Paul. Every day I look at my stats, the only thing I really care about are referring sites...when I see a new referrer, I get excited
And like someone mentioned...you need to think about it as though SEs didn't exist. If you can increase your other methods of traffic, the SE traffic is icing on the cake.

Try re-writing your content so that it does not reflect the phrases and words that are being searched. Do all you can to lower your Google ranking so that your website does not come up where it will have a high possibility of being clicked. I do not know if you can but try to have your website taken out of all directories that it is in.

I take it that the whole point of the post went right over your head then!

Okay, what a hook for a title, I was wondering why someone would want less traffic. Traffic is the name of the game, but I see you want it from different sources. Cool

Nope! Traffic is just traffic.
CONVERSIONS are what it is important.

Sure, Conversions are really what we want. But traffic from Google usually has the best conversion rate.

Care to share any proof to back up that statement?

It was a fine way of wording it! It attracted all our attention, which was the point. Obviously a skilled marketing man.
