Have you ever gotten an article on SlashDot?

If you have, what was your traffic like and how long did it continue to flow to your site?

I've gotten slashdotted a handful of times... I don't know if slashdot commands as much response as it did a couple of years ago, but if the article is somewhat interesting you might get a new unique visit every 1-3 seconds or so while it's in the top spot, which might last 3 hours If it's breaking/controversial geek news you may get more.

Those numbers are based on my experiences and imperfect memory so I might be a bit off.

Wow. I really long to listed on slashdot or digg for something really neat or cool. That would be amazing. Well, I'll just have to pray hard that I get a really neat idea or article heh

I don't have that much knowledge in the geek-topics that are usually popular on digg & slashdot. Therefore i aim at less popular but more effective sites like delicious, reddit & Fark which, combined bring much more traffic than digg in the long run.

Digg is branching out into non technical stuff now too, so that is something to think about.

One thing to keep in mind, there is the infamous "Slashdot Effect" which usually results in the server getting overloaded and failing after a few minutes of slashdot traffic...so you might end up on the forn tpage of Digg and/or Slashdot only to have tyour server dead and no one able to see your site!

With Diggs new "non-tech" sections, you'll have to be careful with what you submit. There were a few people who basically spammed the popular sections (tech, gaming) with "how to market your website" articles which were only loosley based on their categories.

Those guys who spammed were quickly DDoSed/spammed by some of the more immature members of Digg, and AFAIK the sites never came back online.

I've gotten Slashdotted 3-4 times. Each brought around 10,000 uniques over a few hour period.

Short-time lurker, first-time poster.

My site got slashdotted a couple of weeks ago, and the impact was tremendous. My server even shut down pretty quickly.

It can do great things for your site, but it really can't be counted on as regular traffic.

(I hope this doesn't come off as spamming, but I actually just wrote a 10-tips article on how to keep visitors from a digg, del.icio.us, slashdot, etc. traffic boost. I haven't made the 15 posts yet necessary to post a URL, but it's on my site, jasonunger.com.)

Getting Slashdotted/Dugg isn't what you want as a publisher. What you want is for your story to make it to the main page. That is:

1) Submit a story, unreleated to your own website
2) Get this story posted to the front page
3) Have your name link back to your website (or have your website in your user profile, as it pertains to Digg).

Another way to generate traffic from these websites is to comment on every story, get your comments moderated up, and have your website in your signature (the comment will usually have to be on topic, so regular spam crap won't cut it).

Those are the two real ways to generate consistant traffic. You won't get 10,000 uniques every hour, but you'll slowly generate a steady flow of traffic from the various comments pages.

Case in point, Geekstreak still receives hits from an old slashdot story (about 2 years old now).

From an earnings point of view you have to bear in mind the type of people who read those sites, they are not typically ad clickers. Where that leaves you having to endure an onslaught of traffic (20k uniques is not unheard of) for very little return. The benefit comes in the long run where people link to you and you get your pagerank boosted and a steady stream of traffic over a longer period. Its more likely that you'll break a profit from that traffic as opposed to the initial diggers/slashdotters.
