can you guys give me some tips to promote a general directory?

and then monetize it?

Monetizing is easy..
- Open an adsense account
- Start surviving

Promoting it can be a little easier,
- Nice domain name
- Nice design (CSS, tableless, valid everything, etc..)
- PR release
- PPC
- 2-3 Contests
- Free Submission Invitations

Attach it to an already successful website that specializes on a niche. You might need to seed it yourself at first. No one wants to be in a directory all by themselves. People want to be in a directory where their main competitors are.

It seems like there are so many directories out there, you probably have to find some way of setting yours apart. Easiest way is probably to move away from a general directory and towards a more targeted one.
