We have started a contest as a method to try and create some activity on our site. Our prizes value $75.00. Not a great amount of money, but for our audience it might easily gain some interest. The problem is that I'm not confident that we're making the best of it because we're not promoting the contest outside of the site which is probably a waste.

Does anyone know if there are general contest directories? (Are there not always people who search out contests hoping to win stuff? If we could find these general contest seekers, they're likely not skilled enough to compete but at least we can get them in to take a look and maybe some of them will stick around for one reason or another.

Where/how would you promote a contest?

How might I get blogs or social networks to show interest?

Well first off I would try and get your members to help you promote it. Also post it in some other forums that allow talking about it, and their are forums just for contests out there.

Maybe a press release?

There are alot of great graphics communities out there. Register at big graphics forums and advertise your website in the appropriate topics. Spoono.com is a great graphics website, they have a news posting called the "Newsvine". You can e-mail them asking for your contest link to be added and they'll post your link in their news for free.

Good idea,.... Hmm.... Just ask our members to promote the contest? I'm not sure they would be up for it as that would bring more competition for the contest and lessen there chances of winning! lol

I am in the same boat as you. I have started a new contest on my forum and I have started to post it around on other BIG forums. But don’t SPAM them just follow the rules and don’t even post it just add it to your SIG. And also mass e-mail all your members telling them about it

Take a look at their list of links. We give away vegas vacations quite frequently so I have done a little contest marketing in the past. If I can find some of my older lists I will post them for you. If you do some searching you will find quite a few community of sweapers.... they are nutty.

These seem to be mostly sweepstakes which are run by chance, contests are games/tests of skill. The sweepstake directories do seem to differentiate between the two. Still searching, I have found a few contest directories so far.
