Does anyone know (or have a list) of diretorys i can submit my site free to.
Im not selling anything but i want my site higher in the serch engines i obtimized my page but now i need to get more links to my site.

Here are a lot of Social Bookmarking sites that you can submit to (other than directories.) The list is too long so I don't want to post it here. Its at this site:

do you have to put the link in footer?

Do you mean the footer of your site? If that's what you mean, no -- it can be anywhere. But I just use that list to find the bookmarking sites and add my sites by hand separately.

I also hand submit to the big ones, however I do use software called Internet Business Promoter. The cool thing is it allows you to hand submit easily when needed. They have a demo you can check out. It also helps you optimize your sites and has other cool features.

I also know a lot of people who have given up on getting into the DMOZ, but I highly suggest that as well. If you don't mind paying, you can try Yahoo's Directory, but it's expensive.
