HI,

I was wondering if anyone here runs competitions on there sites and how effective it can be.

Because I live and work on a tourist island I had a thought about getting in touch with local business and see if they are willing to donate a prize of some description to a winner of a competition I'm going to run once a month.

I was thinking of having people write articles for me (people who have been to the Island) about the Island, places of interest etc and picking the best article out and giving them the prize for when they come over.

I get the articles and some fresh content each month, which ever business supplies the prize gets all the advertising and links to there web sites and the people get the prize so everyone wins.

Does this kind of thing work ok, anyone got any experiance with this, any hints and tips?

Competitions are great to get visitors in.. But hard to keep them there.

Yeah this can work, tourist luv to give their views about their trips good and bad online in forums. Will they email their articles to you or would they have the option to automatically upload it to your site ? will you be useing an article directory software where they can upload their articles themselves ? I think I saw one advertiseing on the forum. I think you should pitch the idea to your local merchants first to see how much support you will get and consider how you would get the word out to tourists; passing out flyers, ads in your local touristic magazines and being in the top search results for your town etc. numerous ways I'm sure youre considering, good idea go for it!:thumbup:

Thanks for the replies, I would have them send me the articles for now as I can't see many people getting involved straight away, this may change as time goes on though.

If it gets busy I'm a coder in ColdFusion so I can create some kind of automatic submission (already have one running) to make the process a bit quicker.

I've spoken to 3 bars in my area tonight and they have all agreed to donate 20 euros each, so first competition will have a prize of 60 euros in drink :drool:

Tomorrow I'm going round some restaurants to see if they will donate a meal for 2/4 people which will be the following months prizes.. hopefully keep building on this every month :thumbup:

usually in my site they're not considered competitions esp. if you have adbrite.com and adengage to take care of your network ads so it's fairly distributed all over the pages of my sites.
