If you leave your site's address in comments on high PR websites or forums (with an applicable response to the topic at hand), does this count as a backlink for search engines?

99% of these blogs have nofollow tags assigned to all the comments

Do the common blog software like wordpress, movabletype, and b2evolution implement the nofollow tag automatically or will it only be hand done at really large sites?

I believe it is automatically... or it is a recommended setting. I can't remember though. I just know that many many blogs have it enabled.

I've gotten back links by posting on blogs.

BUT...

I always add my URL after my post, not just in the form where they ask for it.

Like this (URL is made up):

"Hey, I agree with your point, but SEO is very complex, blah blah blah.
Keep up the good work!

You may get traffic though but most probably not PR because of the nofollow tag.

That is what I thought but wasn't to sure about it. So no PR will pass through the links on the comments.

On some of my websites you can leave a comment on every article, which people must think goes live immediately because I get a lot of that kind of spam. But nothing is visible to anyone other than the poster until I approve it. Which of course I immediately delete so no one but me sees it. I'm sure not going to buy from or visit someone who just spammed me so you are just wasting your time as well as mine.

I hate bots that autospam the comments section. On one of my sites, I have a tell-a-friend module that's similiar to a comment form that gets my inbox bombed all the time from bots that appear to be leaving a comment.

Even if the blog is a "nofollow" - it would still show up as a backlink. You should coutercheck it using the Google Webmaster Tool or Yahoo Site Explorer. Blog links doesn't usually show up with the "link:" query on Google search.

I was under the impression that links from 'dofollow' blogs do count as a backlink. I'd say any kind of link is a good link. I've had nofollow links show up in Yahoo before.

Certain blogs use dofollow meaning they have the nofollow feature turned off. These do count towards backlinks, however if you put keywords as your name they will most likely get deleted. Just use your name and they will keep your link. It won't help any specific keywords but will increase your overall link popularity.
