What methods have you done in trying to advertise?

Websites, E-Mails, Localy(businesses, coffe shops, etc..?)

I've done almost all of these hehe.. What about you!?

I've only done advertising through websites and emails. Locally, have only done it by word-of-mouth.. basically I tell my friends, they tell their friends, etc. Nothing too big there.

If I have exhausted all the 'Classic' Methods (MSN Name, Forum Sig, Paid Spots on Forums) I ususally:

1. Talk to a local wheat paster and pay him/her to past some posters promoting the site (check legality in your area)
2. Throw Print outs EVERYWHERE, car windsheilds, mailboxes, everywhere.

I still havent tried any kind of offline promotion such as flyers or newspapers, I am currently sticking to banner/PPC advertising, I have also yet to try newspaper ADs.

I really only try to stick with word of mouth for the first few months, if that doesn't succeed bring in the heavy artilery

Make a big advertisment campaign in the beginning so word of mouth can occur later on.

Agree with Tony. If you are ready to invest some money in advertising just do it. Your site will get exposure and if it is really good, word of mouth will occur later

How does one go about building a list of newsletter subscribers for a brand new site?

If your site is TOTALLY new and you don't have anything existing to go off of...where do you begin? I know this is extremely open-ended, but it's pretty much where I am right now.
