I have used DIR sites in the past to submit my site links etc and realise that your domain/site gets a better PR as bots often crawl DIR sites.

Is there any other benefits of submitting your URL to the 100s of DIR sites available!

Also is it really worth paying to get onto Yahoo's Directory etc?!

I haven't got lots of experience with directories, but if you can find the best directories and actually get into them you could be talking about a lot of traffic.

There are a few file hosting directories that have made my mate a lot of money, he gets about 5k uniques a day from the directories alone.

Yeah, I think its something I need to look at when I begin the promotion of my new website! I need to spend some more time looking at the best sites to go for and benefits!

DMOZ is supposed to be a big one?! anyone used DMOZ before?

No, but I think it's quite hard to get into. You can add yourself to the directory but you have to be reviewed and things.

That's what I think anyway.
