just wondering if anyone has managed to get into google news and wheather it brings you much traffic?

Not google news, but some kind soul made a comment on one of the front page yahoo stories, that ended up being the third comment down. The comment didn't even link to my site; it just had the web address and it still brought in about 6k unique visitors for the day that it was on the front page. Now I look for related stories, blog entries, etc all the time to find something else that I can promote on. So google news would probably bring plenty of traffic with it also.

Two years ago it was still relatively easy to get into Google News. Nowadays it's harder.

It can bring lots of traffic to your site. If you have a big news site you may get hundreds of visitors a day just from being indexed in Google News. And if one of your news articles makes it to the top of one of the news categories you can expect thousands of visitors in less than an hour.

Edit: A few weeks ago someone at Webmasterworld asked in the supporter forum about Google News. Someone replied you need at least 5 editors (with publicly available profiles), 1000 articles/posts, unique URLs for each article, ...
