I think viral marketing might be the answer to some of the posts in this forum... As far as wikipedia is concerned viral marketing could be defined as "marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic."

In other words: tons of traffic. The question is obvious: how can you develop promotional viral marketing strategies? Has anybody had an experience in this field?

I've personally had one, but it wasn't my intention... I published a rumour about a Spanish congresswoman; three days later a TV program echoed it, and for a week or so I received 100 times the traffic I used to receive. It was an awesome experience, and I'd love to know if there is any way to plan something similar.

I'm going to be trying it for a teen site I'm releasing. I think it needs to be controversial (if you're using an article) or really capture the moment (if it's not an article).

As I am the inventor of the tools, I have a more technological view on viral things.

For example, I was selling one tool and created educational materials about getting traffic. It was in PDF. And this guide was rebrandable. People could give away this guide to others and their link site was still in the guide.

So, others were virally motivated to share this useful info because as side effect of it they were promoting their site in the resources too.

But this is a simple example. And a much better example is with the viral module integrated into tech solution. They spread the solution and in reward get *votes* from the sites of all users that they brought. Thus, they give their base good solution at very good price and get their own rank boosting empire.

I see viral marketing as more of a facet of PR. Traditionally, PR (for marketing purposes) was based around getting press via television or print. However, with the internet beginning to eclipse both TV and print, I think we're going to see a big shift in that school of though in the next decade.
