I recently submitted a certain thread on my boards to a handful of social bookmarking sites (digg, reddit, stumbleupon, and delicious) and am not getting a pretty decent amount of traffic(at least for this site).

They are all viewing this one thread but aren't browsing the rest of the site nor are they clicking any adsense ads.

Any quick suggestions as how to conver this traffic?

It is the same for me. also, your article got to be very very interesting to stand out of those millions blogs and websites.

Actually, the problem is that the first hits are not targeted traffic. People who are just curious to see the recent posts.

But after sometimes, people will search for your keywords, and those will be more targeted. They will browse your site.

It's my experience.

I realized this thread is in the wrong forum...

Anywho, well it was about a ticket giveaway, and got about 150 uniques within 10 minutes(its a lot for me) but nobody even left that thread, I believe they were genuinly interested in the subject though.

I think you should add some kind of feature topics field that can be seen thruout the site. It's a matter of getting peoples attention. For example, if it was a blog in question, the best thing to do would be put "related articles" as well as "featured articles" and "most popular articles"... Maybe you could do something like that for your forum!

This social bookmarking site's traffic is only temporary. You'll get a sudden burst of traffic only. Maybe you'll make money for that point of time. So unless you have good content (atleast for those visitors), then won't like it.

I think it's worth submitting to Digg and delicious. Even if you can't make it to the front page/ favourite pages, you'll still get traffic, whenever some dudes search for the stuff they look for. I had myself experienced this. This has it's own advantages also. Not many will post their content in social bookmarking sites, you you'r post will end up in the first page if anyone searches for that particular keyword.

What does it take you? 5 minuted of your time. If you're post is good (and have some luck) you'll make it to front page, even otherwise you get free traffic!

Great idea, I think I may implement something like that.

I've gotten some huge diggs on some articles (almost 2000 diggs) but I saw the same exact results. Almost no one clicked on ads and the traffic died down quickly. However, the real benefits are from back links that hundreds of blogs and sites gave me after seeing the article

Submitting your stuff to social sites is spam.

Since you are interested in promoting your website, you submit your site not because it is interesting to the target audience, but because you simply want traffic and backlinks. Because of such behaviour the social sites will die. Sooner or later, anyway.

What you need to do is to write quality content, communicate on forums and blogs (I said communicate, not spam), issue press releases, submit articles, etc. Get your word out there.

It was about Net neutrality right after it didn't get enough votes. I had adsense but still no one really clicked any. However, I once got on the front page of netscape.com with only about 50 votes and I made more money. It seems as if the digg people are net savvy and they avoided ads but the netscape crowd clicked on ads.

Submitting spam to social sites is spam. I don't think social sites that have features that specifically target spam (like down votes) suffer much from spam. But I agree... writing quality content is the key for long term success
