quick traffic in short term is post on webmaster sites asking for reviews, if worthy have your site on digg, stumbleupon etc.. And of course you can buy traffic from reliable sources like Y!, G, MSN etc.. One other big way to help get traffic if you are making quality posts in forums is by using sig links. Also if you have a newsletter or other sites promote your new site via those if applicable.

PPC and SE referrals and if it's the right type of site, a contest or other incentive program to encourage the members that find and appreciate the site to refer new members.

This completely depends on the type of site. With EarnersForum.com it was all about PR centered around the contest. After 6-8 weeks we began to get a steady stream of SE traffic. I rarely use PPC, but it is also a viable option depending on the site's purpose and set up.
So a few of the possibilities are:
1. PPC marketing
2. SE referrals
3. Contests
4. Press Releases
5. Blog mentions
6. Paid advertising
7. Using other sites in your network to drive traffic
I personally utilize 2, 3, 5, and 7 most of the time!

I've been using 2 and 5 along with blog carnivals, posting in forums with my blog in my sig line and commenting on other blogs. I find it works better if you actually say something constructive and participate in the topic instead of just saying "I agree" or "Good post".

I agree, good post!
lol..just kidding. I know as far as the forum sig's go. I have over 100 links from SEO Chat forums. Not sure how much weight the give me in the SERPS but I know that traffic is minimal...maybe 2 hits a week.

Can you explain more about these "blog carnivals"? How do they work, how do you get into them, where do you find them, and how much do they benefit you?:s

I wish a few more big earners would reply to the threads, it starts off with almost all of them replying to now just 3 including Lee who will always say something.
Oh well, some information is better than no information

Those aren't very good methods usually. I preffer using more efficient methods I developed.
Digg, stumbledupon- your link will just get burried or not show up at all
Buying traffic-99% of people will fail at this. You have to be really skilled to make a positive ROI with bought traffic
Sig links-OK but temporary traffic. Very little traffic though.
Newsletters-not so good either

Thanks, Bigmista. I found that this morning on Google, actually, and signed up for a couple. I can't wait to see what kind of effect it has. Thanks for pointing out the existence of these. I had never heard of them before your post yesterday.

Sorry that you feel that way but these are proven ways for me. and the question was how do you drive traffic. Those are ways to drive traffic. If your site sucks well people won't come back but if your site is good people will come back and visit it, but they will have found it by digg, stumble PPC or otherwise.
Sig links Temp--- If you think so I have sig links from posting i did years ago still bringing me traffic. Also i have quality links due to them which helps with rankings etc..
Newletters are GOOD to get the word out but need to be relevant.
As far as buying traffic 99% fail i would like to see some actual numbers as it sounds like you are pulling that out of your rear. as i would say some do fail but you just have to start out slow and steady and put a price on what a visitor is worth to you and just never bid above that.

I visit many webmaster forums and I almost never hear adwords or puchased success stories which leads me to suspect many people can't generate a positive ROI with paid traffic.

1. If you have good content then you can link to it from wikipedia. Wikipedia can generate a lot of traffic.
2. Reddit.com, I always get hits for articles listed there.
3. Search Engines, A few well placed links and you can get indexed within a couple of days.
4. Good on-page SEO mixed with easy to rank for keywords and MSN will start to give you traffic.
5. Comments on well established blogs. No spam keep it relevant.
Hope this helps.
