OK everyone what's your strategy for submitting to lots of directories?

Do you pay someone to do it? Use some kind of bot? How do you choose which ones are worth it? Do you ever pay to get in a directory?

Me personally I do it by hand. I check webmaster forums for people offering free listings in tehir enw directories or directories that are normally paid offering free or reduced prices. Like I paid to be listed in the WOW directory when they dropped prices back when it got sold. I also submit when I see a directory in somones sig. I usually do about 20 or so per week.

Directory submissions should be done by hand.

I use a list of good directories, search for seo free web directories on google.

I then submit a project to rent-a-coder along the following lines and I usually pay around $50.

You'll be submitting my xxxxxx site to the Directory Web sites located here (your free seo directory list).

N.B Do not submit to DMOZ !!!!

You don't have to register with any of these Directories. All you have to do is copy and paste the following information into boxes at each Directory Web site:

1. My Web site URL
2. Title of my Web site
3. My email address
4. My Name
5. My Web site's description
6. A category
7. Keyword (only some directories).

For 2 above you will rotate through 5 titles that are supplied in the attachment, so that not all directories get the same title.

You will need to take a screenshot of the confirmation page when available as proof of submission, if you cannot submit to a site through technical reasons or there is no confirmation page keep a log of which ones, and move on to the next site.

The submission services do it by hand too. I found a good one if someone want to submit.

I didn't try it yet.

When you have several websites, you don't want to submit yourself. It's a boring task, and it should be outsourced.

If you only have a website and a blog, you may do it by hand though.

You should spend your days advertising your website, and find new ways to earn more money.

I appreciate your opinion, george but I dislike directory submissions.

Why do directories SUCK?

1. Cause it is way tooo tiimmeee coonssuummiing waiitng for the submissions to be approved or declined. Often the webmasters dont even repont

2. Cause a lot of your submissions get rejected

3. You often have to pay up to get a link that passes PR what a RIIIP

4. If you somehow get your Pr passing link added to the directory your link will be on some remote part of the site whihc google may visit one every 3 months and has zero PR. There may also be tons of outbound links so no almost PR is passed. ..what a waste of tiiiimmeeee.

5. oh and the links arent even relavent so you will get penalized

First of all, DMOZ is the most important free directory.
Secondly, submission to DMOZ has to be the best quality - as objective as possible. Only the owner has to do it.
Thirdly, multiple submissions to DMOZ won't get you anywhere (and probably block you from further inclusion).

P.S. You don't get penalized for irrelevant links.
You may be slightly penalized for links from bad neighbourhood, but it is easily battled with more quality incoming links.

I didn't think you could get penalized for incoming links, just some links count more than others.

I agree with your other points, however for $50 on rent-a-coder for about 200+ directories I think it's woth a go.

I've just run a link: command on google for one of my sites I ran a directory campaign on 6 months ago and I'm getting quite a few backlinks.

Ed,

Good points you raised about time consuming but then again is there anything we do for our sites that isn't time or money consuming?

As for the whole PR argument. Most of us have graduated beyond watching the little green bar. We know it's cute but the data it represents can be up to 3 months old.

So submitting to directories is all about the numbers. More backlinks with good anchor text = good. Whether they are PR0 or PR5.

I finf buying links to be more effective. Since most directories these days require that you par for PR it seems less work to jsut buy some links instead.

PR is still very important though. Ever notice how sites with PR 5+ seem to rank higher than the PR0 sites? W3rd. Even yahoo rankings are affected by it.

Note that any outsourcing activity depends on cost effectiveness in terms of time & money.Depending on what other things you would do yourself if you outsource, opportunity cost always takes precedence.

If you take your blog and sites like a real business, and want to grow: OUTSOURCE.

And during the time others are doing the work for you: make money.

If you try to do everything yourself, you believe that you are saving money, but actually you are losing big time.

Don't outsource only if you can't afford it.

In the beginning, I was submitting articles by hand, but now: NO WAY.

I pay someone to do my submissions as plenty of people online that will take money for directory submissions and do it cheaper than my time is worth. i would say i get around 80 to 95% acceptance rate so i can't complain
