a few thoughts. to get yoru own list going you need exposure, to get out to lists is easier, where to find? well, yahoo and topica hold huge use-group places that one can post, its not hard to find several thousand to over hundred thousand users in a few interests, then mail them till your personal list is built, basically piggy-backing on the success of other mass use-groups in your niche.
I have in the past used paid safelists, sure they work too as you get to post mroe often
the Key is the actual subject line, if you catch interest they may open your mail.
-geneology lists are reputedly good, again this takes an investment to do then
There are a couple or world-wide huge lists that allways get response, they are free or paid, (herculist etc..)
if you use soem every day, you will grow a bit at a time.
-if you join many free do so on alternating days so you can post on different days also, as some are weekly, or every other day or such for free.
be wary of buying lists of just names though for who knows where those names came from.
