What section do you go into to edit a template?

It depends on the website, if you're using a CMS with skinning options etc etc

I think he's talking about myspace templates, I'm not sure though.

And I've never gotten into the myspace 'thing' so I can't really help. Sorry.

How can I add a style/background and crap?

You just paste your css hacks into the about me section or what ever section you please actually.

I tried to put up a background, but you can only see the background behind the whole page, there is still the white content block in my way >.<

You need to change the background color then or make it transparent, I think. Just use www.strikefile.com .
