I understand that viral marketing is an effective way of promoting your website. Show your website to a small number of people who each show your site to more people and so on.
How would you guys suggest to go about this without being spammy?
Write a "how to______" report and give it away for free. Have your visitors download it from your site. In the report you tell them that they can give it away to their visitors or subscribers.
This can have a dramatic impact on your traffic. Remember that you need to put in quality information your visitors are interested in.
It was a short video click of two cartoon turtles humping... the female looked VERY bored... then you see a human hand reach down and strap a cellphone to the male turtles back... cellphone started vibrating and the the female looked VERY happy.
There was funny music in the background (though I think they should have played "Sexy Back" by Timberlake instead). At the end of the clip a URL was displayed. EVERYONE who saw the clip in my office went to the site.
For viral marketing to not be spammy you got to convice potential customers to circulate it for you.
Yeah 'The Tipping Point' is brilliant. Another great read along the same line is 'Unleashing the idea virus' by Seth Godin. I think you can download the pdf version of it for free on his site.
