I use a custom one I wrote myself. It's simple, small (the core is 1 file, and less than 40 lines of code) and is easily modifiable. I can pretty much "plug in" a new template within a minute.

I am genuinely interested to know why you think they look pretty bad? Design might be dull yeah, but its like that for a purpose. I'm interested to know!

http://www.thepritchardgroup.net/ (one of Bryan's clients) and is wordpress powered.

The only plugin is a random links plugin and wasn't really needed, just spared me some time.

Look at how some pages have a different sub header, different header to the wordpress title etc.

I was really quite proud of what Bryan forced me to do.

I wrote my own custom CMS, because I needed some really complex functionality.

On almost all my sites I use this awesome CMS called Notepad. Gotta try it... :-P

I've also used DotNetNuke (Super powerful, but it requires a Windows server and is more bloated than a dead cow) and CMSimple.dk (A fairly simple CMS, not much extra load time, but not a lot of features).

Notepad isn't a CMS. But its one of my most-used programs when I create sites! Dreamweaver is for pansies. Real geeks use notepad.

Notepad is not good with unix style line feeds though!

I use scite which is a freeware notepad style generic text editor with tabs that is pretty nice: http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html
