Interesting.
Maybe I should just start again. I use Joomla CMS. Possibly the most powerful CMS available.

I tried a few of the large open source CMS like joomla, mambo, modx and a few others.

Personally I hated them!

Powerful yes, but they are so huge and bloated it was a pain to use them. They were trying to be everything to everyone with countless features and felt like Microsoft Word in a way - i.e. there were an endless number of features available but you only ever ended up using a small set of features. I found them really annoying.

I now use a little CMS called sNews that is released under a craetive commons license. Unlike things like Joomla, sNews is a single php file! It doesn't have as many features as the big heavy weights, but I find its pretty decent - two example of sites I run that are running it at www.mdibb.net , and I am trying out the new release candidate for sNews 1.5 over at www.computer-rage.com

I recommend it if you just want a nice simple CMS for putting together and managing a fairly simple, stright forward site on your own. Its in active development with an equally active userbase all contributing ideas and code to do extra stuff: You can get it at http://www.solucija.com/home/snews/

I'm REALLY into WordPress right now. I've been trying to get it used on all of my newer sites because it's cheap to intergrate...it's easy, widely used...and has a lot of support in the plug-in community.

Though it's not too versatile for sites outside of the "content" field...if you can run WordPress, I highly suggest it.

I also use wordpress as a CMS with a custom template I've created which removes a lot of the other junk I don't need.

I've been experimenting with PHP-Fusion :P and I saw some Nuke-Evolution which I might check out. Might also setup Wordpress to see how it goes

Hmm interesting that a lot of you are using wordpress.

I used it originally for my first foray into a "content site". Its nice and easy to add stuff but ultimately I thought that the time-ordered nature fo teh site didn't really "work" for a site with a load of articles and stuff on it IMO.

I too use Wordpress in my main site, but with a lot of customization and plug-ins. This almost give it an CMS feeling while keeping all the advantages inherent to Wordpress : pinging, blogging, etc.

For example, I use a plug-ins to make a page as the main page of my blog and not a list of posts.

Wordpress may be great for blogs (well, it is). But as soon as you want to start a bit more sophisticated website or differentiate yourself from the crowd, you should look into Drupal / Plone or (hire someone to) build a custom CMS.

It depends on what you wanted to do with them. They may be great for small to middle-sized (news) portals. For anything larger or smaller, they are either bloated or unsatisfactory.

Well, to be frank, these two sites look pretty bad and the functionality of sNews seems to be very limited to articles and static pages. While it may be enough for some very basic sites, it's just too little for anything more ambitious.
