AdWords needs some skill to use efficiently.
Here is an article on optimizing your AdWords.
Press releases are worth it for newsworthy causes only, and don't expect much from them anyway. A $80 or $120 PR WEb press release might worth it if you write it well and have a good reason to do it.
I'd suggest investing in some website optimization consultant to tune your site and copywriting to get quality content on your site. Reviews of products you have, related articles, etc.
Of course, you may consider me biased here. But speaking from experience, having an easy to use site with a lot of unique content is the best thing you can have right now.
The thing is, if you have quality content and your affiliate products only add to your site and content, you can build relationships with other sites for free. It'll require some work, though.
Great content attracts traffic and links and makes your customers happy to buy from you. What more do you need.
As for advertising, buying a link from a relevant site that will bring you traffic (in a prominent spot) might worth it, but you'll spend a lot of time looking for that link even with such a system as Text Link Ads.
So, in my opinion, the best investment is in the site's quality.
