Who (or where I) could submit my websites to directories?

I was listening to ShoeMoney "podcast" (webmasterradio.fm) and he mentioned directories. I've used directories to submit games, but I've never done that for my website (besides submiting it to couple of blog directories and to google manually).

Any hints or tips where should I start? My site is already well established, but I'd like to test and see what directories could do for me.

How much they cost? Any advice on what to keep in mind when submiting to directories?

Thanks.

Directory submission won't get you much. Directory links are mostly irrelevant and won't drive you any traffic. Directories aren't trusted much by the search engines, because anyone can get a link from them and they do link to anyone.

On the other hand, if you get included in a directory with quality control (such as DMOZ or paid directories), they may worth working with.

Also, if you get many links with the same anchor text (title descriptions in directory submission), those links may seem suspicious if you don't have a heavy internal linking background. So a good advice would be to use as many unique titles as you can, probably around 3-10.

There are about 500-700 directories in my opinion, though I've been told one can find about 1000 of them.

Spending months on submitting there is a useless waste of time for a business owner, so you'd rather use some directory submission service.

Some services are reliable, such as addurl.nu of Jim Westergren, and cost quite a bit ($250 here for 500), other services mostly have no reputation but cost about $100-125.

Altenatives to addurl.nu could be this, this or our forum member, who submits for twice as cheap ($10 per 100 directories) and has already earned some positive reputation here.

At any rate, if you have extra marketing budget, I'd suggest creating unique quality content for your site. This is the best linking strategy out there and it'll be for a while. (For instance, if you get a freelance article writer, you may get about 10 quality articles on your topic for $100. Just check the articles aren't a mishmash of other articles or a copy..that's another topic, I guess.)

Thanks ANOnym - I was looking for paid submission service, and rather have some quality site submissions than tens of thousands worth nothing.

Thanks for those tips.

I also think that content is the king

Anyone else? Where have you spent some bucks and got results you wanted?

It is BS that shoemonay makes his money using directories.

I make good money online and I don't use directories.

The truth is, if you want links trade them with sites relevant to yours. That means having to add lots of content before yo utrade the links. Also consider purchasing links fomr sites of PR5 or higher that are relevant to yours.

Well, first of all - ShoeMoney didn't say that he makes money using directories. He said that it could be good to submit to directories when you launch your site. My site's been active for about a year, and doing fine without submissions, but I'm looking for additional traffic - so I'm interested to know what this directory thing is all about.

Yes, I know that I need to trade with relevant sites and I'm also considering purchasing ads to my PR5 site - but now I was asking about directories.

Have you used directories, or can you give me more specific information why you think people should not use directories?

Directories are mostly good for SEO purposes, getting those extra inbound probably won't make a different in terms of user recognition at the directories, but it might shoot you up in that search term you have been chasing

A list of rated directories along with a submission service can be found here

This is opinion which may be correct, it's difficult to prove. In my experience directories won't get you a lot of traffic. However, I have a site that ranks for a two-word phrase from directory submissions alone.

Again, difficult to prove. However I would say that a search engine may rate a site listed in a quality directory (a directory with decent PR) because it has been through a human based selection process.

I'm sure there are more than this, do a search for 'add your site' in goole.

Personally, I submit a job to rent-a-coder when I do a directory submission and have paid around $50 for ~200 quality directories.

Well...I guess I can give it a go. After all - it costs only $50 or something so after doing this once I'll have a better picture about how it impacts.

Btw - is there any chances that my if I use service like this (who has got lots of positive comments here) may affect NEGATIVELY?

Could google give penalty to page rank or something? Is there anything negative that submitting to lots of directories could do?

It's possible, but I've not seen conclusive proof one way or another.

Thanks for your answers. Now I really need to get some *facts*. I hardly want to ruin the reputation of my well-established site (and actually *pay* for that )
