I am concerned about identity theft with email. In my own
experience, I have been a victim of several scams that tried
to get me to click on links to "verify my account information".
Some of the emails displayed legitimate looking company logos,
such as with eBay and PayPal.
In one case, a so-called eBay email addressed me as "Dear eBay
Member", instead of my account name known by eBay. Next, was the
statement that an "eBay Unpaid Item" was not paid, and to click
on a link to "Respond To This Notice". Since I knew the item
mentioned was not ordered by me, I was skeptical and forwarded
the email to:
spoof@paypal.com, who confirmed that this was
indeed a "fake email", and not to respond since they already
have my account password, SSN, credit card number, etc.
As a result of my bad experiences using email, my general policy
now is to immediately delete ALL email's from anyone I don't know
or expect a message. Thus most of my email goes to the trash or
junk folders!
I expect others have experienced this same problem, and as a
result, email marketing may not be as effective as it could be
because of all the scams going on.
