I am curious as to how much you guys believe to be a good percentage of your income to reinvest in advertising and growing your business. I mean doing whatever it takes to get your sites to perform better ... programming, design, seo, ppc, you name it. What is the percentage you are reinvesting and do you believe that the amount you spend on it is what you recommend others to do as well?

Thank you for your feedback!

None in advertising -- there are way too many ways to promote yourself for free -- but the rest gets split between my wallet and my products.

20 to 30%. you need to reinvest if you want to get your site or forum out there.

I would re-invest almost all of my front end stuff. None of it if it came from the back-end.

To expand your business quickly to start with, it's a good idea to reinvest as much as you can. Paid advertising "usually" gets quicker results. A lot of people, myself included, have a low cashflow so we have to rely on slower, but cheaper advertising,

all the best,

Jonathan.

I have no extra income for much advertising right now. I'm going the "viral advertising" route.

Must say, though, I was a bit skeptical of the whole "viral" thing until just the last couple of days. I created a central hub where bloggers can announce their contests (I got tired of coming across them after the deadlines!).

The reaction has been amazing. People linking, posting about the site, emailing saying: "What a great idea!!!"

I've not had that kind of response for my other sites. It's been great.

Yes. viral is good, once it gets going - especially if you get some really active people working on your behalf!
That is a great idea musing - looks like you'll do well with that one. Can people receive email alerts when a new contest is posted?

best wishes,

Jonathan.

Its a very good idea to reinvest any profits you make back into advertising. This will create a snowball effect as more people come to you quicker and with more money, you'll be reinvesting for more advertising to get even more people. I would suggest testing your free markets first, save money if you dont have any, and try starting with low-cost campaigns and build from there. But definitely put profits back into your business for more adverts.

Hi, Jonathan. Thanks for the encouragement!

We don't have email alerts at the moment. It looks, though, like we'll be updating every weekday. There are a lot of blog contests out there!

EDITED to add: If people would like, they can now get email updates when contests are posted with prizes in certain general categories (the arts, crafts, electronics).

Your question gave us the idea, Jonathan. Thanks!

Most of my "advertising" is done by satisfied clients who tell their friends. As for my own advertising efforts, the boards and other direct request areas are valuable.

I pay the hosting bills and the rest goes back into advertising the site.

So I would say 90% or so
