I love little contests where you can earn $20, $30 or more dollars if you win. I also really love the idea of having these in order to promote your site. I feel that there are many out there that would agree.

Now how do you find these contests and how does one promote their own?!

what kind of sites are you talking about?

...if you let ANYONE enter into your contest you will benefit from word of mouth, as others will put links on their sites for others to visit. (depending on the contest prizes of course).

A couple of considerations:
1. How easy is it to participate in the contest? (ex. amount of work required)
2. What is the amount of the prize? (the more more money offered, the more people will want to join)
3. How long does the contest run? (you need to give people time to participate)

I just started a referral contest where the top winner will be paid $50 American Express gift check, and 3 prizes of $10 gift cards.

However it seems like no one really cares about the contest..

When you guys start up contests, do your members really get involved??

In the contest I set up for my new site (see sig, Bright Ideas) I decided to
send out a separate PDF with the eZine file to promote it. I hope to get a very
high number of downloads, so a high number of people will see the contest.

I also chose to go with high numbers - $100 - to provide a real incentive. $20
is nice, but $100 is serious money, and worth signing up to a new forum for.
I have yet to see how effective it is, but I will report back with my success
(or failure!
