with zero budget to generate traffic. First off hit up friends for links on high traffic sites that will do it for free. 2nd submit some articles from your site on digg. 3rd install stumbleupon toolbar and stumble your site. 4th put links in your sig on forums that relate to your topic and make quality posts. 5th link exchanges. 6th get money to advertise site.

Find intelligent things to say in related forums, newsgroups and any other places users can generate content.

Beg, borrow and steal as many links as you can to get you indexed in GOOG, MSN, and YHOO.

Submit to all of the free directories.

Write some articles on the subject with links to you and submit them to article submission services who will publish them all over town.

Once you have trickles of traffic - GREAT content attracts more. IF you are trying to attract clickers to MFA sites or yet another arcade site then you might as well start spamming and playing black hat. You'll have more success with that.

All that those people said.

The way I will lay it out is,

- get your site the most SEO as possible as you can and submit to mayors search engines.
- link it from your sites
- link exchange with similar sites
- use it as signature in the forums you visit

You can also do advertising (banner) exchanges with other sites and write articles and submit them to article directories.

A technique I've used with success is to offer something free to the big blogs in the business/area. The people behind them tend to be more accessible and open-minded. For example, you can offer them a free trial of your new script that finds and fixes all broken links and comment spam. Then they blog about you giving you free publicity, links, and credibility.

To expand on the idea of creating quality content for links, I'd like to suggest the power of early information. Be on the forefront of your niche and be the first to publish news about it. Then, contact other sites and bloggers within your industry/niche and alert them to it with a link to your site. I can't tell you what a traffic boost it was for my old blog to get a backlink from Engadget because I was the first to cover an emerging tech story.

Also, for you bloggers, RPC pings and technorati tags. Semi-noobish these days but that doesn't mean it won't work.

Offer your services in exchange for links. Handy with photoshop? Offer to make a banner for someone in exchange for a link. Mow their lawn. Marry their ugly daughter -- Just get the link!

I would find related blogs, forums, etc.. and post on those sites (within topics). Yahoo email lists are great for this.
Make a simple signature for your forum posts.

Ask people to review your site in the forums and email lists.

Comment on blogs

Netscape.com is your friend!

Find coupons for Search engine advertising and use them (like MSN who gives out $200 in credit frequiently).

Respond to questions, comments, etc, on your site and often. This will bring them back.

Use Sitemaps and submit often.

I also start out with launching a partial site with no more than half the content I intend to have on it. I add something new everyday and ping all the search engines of content changes. This gets them coming back often and speeds up the indexing.

I put google adsense on the site (only temporarily if I am not going to use it) to get Google bot to do a quicker index.

If using blog software for the site, I remove common blog terms on the site like trackback, pingback, comments, etc..
This will help your index also since it may keep you out of googles blog index if google thinks your a website updating frequently and not a blog updating frequiently.

Make a bunch of usernames for the social sites and add new pages and content frequently.

I would say wikipedia, but they have added nofollows to all their links. before that, it was like gold getting linked from there.

PS- Ignore the Grumpy angery face, it was an accident!

This is very important IMO. If you have some friends in the business with high traffic sites that will link to you for free to get you going, you have a great advantage. Also, once you have multiple sites running you can have a link to a new site from all of your existing trafficked sites and get a good head start.

again it will give you traffic but i dont think it really targeted enought....but in saying that you might get some extra sales.

using ppc, myspace, youtube is going to give you better results!!

the more targeted your traffic the more your message gets read and understood.

you want to get the most desparate buyers out there thats why if you go to where the customers are most likely to hang out and get them to your site you bound to triple you sales.

This has been proven time and time again

Go to addons.mozilla.org/firefox/138/ (sorry, I'm still too new to post the link  )

For more general info on stumbleupon, take a look at stumbleupon.com

It's basically collaborative resource discovery.

Make a video about your site and put it on YouTube, then hope it goes viral. Use friends, sites, etc that you have. If you have 20 websites that are getting a fair amount of traffic, then just put a post or banner on the site.

I'd say any kind of niche content site is a good idea.
