Remember the quote "Bad Press is Good Press"? Has anybody created fake bad press and sent it out via email or fake blogs? I don't play around with this myself but still find it interesting.

I bet an email that detailed something horrible like "This Guy Drove Drunk and Killed my Brother" then point it to a personal "Made for Adsense" blog might do wonders for backlinks and Google PR.

I am willing to bet that the worse the story, the better the results. You could even make up an entire story and have 2 blogs that played both sides.

Sadly the worse the story is the more likely it would get spread and the more likely a person would be to make money off said story. It's unfortunate, but most likely true. I personally won't be the one to test out that theory though.

All press is definitely not good press... part of my job is helping companies "clean up" the bad press, and believe me; they don't want it or benefit from it most of the time. While a little publicity stunt might work, people are smarter now than they used to be, and they see through a lot more.

What you're talking about probably wouldn't work though, and isn't quite the same as a publicity stunt. It's just an email. If you're talking about sending the email out to a large number of general readers, you'll be flagged as a spammer most likely, and will have to deal with any repercussions. If you mean you'd send an email to a media outlet, hoping to have the story printed with your url, it wouldn't work either - journalists would see the site and immediately scrap the email (assuming you could write something convincing enough for them to read it anyway).
