Someone told me recently that the absolute best way to generate traffic to a site without any shadow of a doubt is to write and submit articles to article sites.

I was wondering if anyone can agree with this or not?

To me it seems kinda mad to spend time writing your own unique content, then give it away for anyone to use!

At least when people "steal" your content you can get them shut down pretty easily, but this way you are giving them a carte blanch to take and use it! It just doesn't seem to make sense to me!

Anyone had any experience - good or bad - about this sort of thing?

Thanks

The idea behind article marketing is that it produces several one-way inbound links.

It also helps build your reputation as an 'expert' in your niche and therefore can build regular visitors who bookmark your site when they follow the link in your about author section.

Obviously you will want a lot of unique content on your own website - but for each piece of unique content on your website you may have full details on one aspect of your niche. You can write about one aspect of your niche and have some deritive articles (not duplicate, but articles that contain the same message) - these can be used to syndicate out to article sites that will then produce one-way links that will help boost your SEO for your website and make it much easier to be found in organic SERPS

So how does having an article used on another site "generate" any back links? What is to stop the person using the article just removing your links and name from the article?

There's nothing to physically stop them, but you can pretty easily check, and go after them if they violate the distribution terms. I prefer keeping unique content on my own site, and once in a while I'll release something in one place or another (not mass-distributed) if it's been indexed on my site and isn't drawing that much traffic itself anymore. I usually us a paid directory (like AC) and then release it for reprint sales from my own sites - keeping most unavailable. I've gotten enough sales at about $25 / reprint to make that route worthwhile.

I don't take a writer very seriously when I see their name plastered on mass-distributed articles tossed on any article directory in creation, so I don't go that route. It doesn't help reputation as much as some people think. But if the main concern is the backlinks, then give it a shot. You won't know if it works for you if you don't try it. If you don't want to release your current articles, try making edited, abbreviated versions of them to distribute instead.
