Thanks for the article, I just thought of something. What if you hired a designer/coder to create top of the line themes available on a variety of cms's then within those themes you embed advertisements like adsense or maybe even cpa offers.

You then promote them like crazy and hopefully get people using them.

aleish, what I mean by that is include a code in your site that doesn't allow people to link directly to your theme (ie. http://www.yoursite.com/theme.zip) ... instead make them go to (http://www.yoursite.com/themes.html) to download it.

Nice post. Kinda the same as distributed templates, scripts or web based
widgets and software too.

I remember a while back someone suggested using a WYSIWYG editor to
create a software program that just had an embedded web browser that
was fixed to your site.

Then use the hundreds of software distribution and download sites to give
it away for free. Not only do you get tons of high PR links, but you can
stick dynamic affiliate ads in the software too

Now if there was a way to keep the user of the theme from removing your link all together....
