you could post in other forums of competitors and steal their clients....He he LOL a bit naughty i guess! if your forum ends up with better content (obviously controled by you) then they will choose to come to your forum instead of the others.

There are websites that offer to post on your forums for very little money. Try googling paid to post of forums, or somehting similar, I am sure you can find a few.

I used a couple when i first began and they did a great job getting my community active.

I hope I have helped,
Candace

IMO using social networking sites to generate targeted traffic for your community is a better option to reach loads of people who will be interested in joining your community.

I see that your forum is very general. It's very hard to grow a general forum nowadays. You have to target a specific niche, if you have absolutely no competition then it might be easy, it might not because it could also mean that there's not a lot of people interested in your niche.

Also, try to do something that gets people excited. Not necessarily viral, but something that makes people feel special. What I did was open the forum with a "pre-launch", and whoever got 10 posts during that period would get a free VIP membership. It worked like a charm.

Just use your imagination instead of just opening your forum and doing the usual.

Hobbits' suggestion with the free-VIP membership for the early birds is very good. I did the same some time ago, and still do it. It helps build a very stable membership with lots of active members.

Try advertising at the social networking sites - myspace.com, facebook, you might try youtube if you can make movies...

I do have several forums but I can tell you right now, it is not easier. It is way easier to fail than to succeed.
I am afraid I can help you much because I am looking for the same answer as you are.

well from what ive seen real brief is you have your forum in an unusual subfolder.

when people click on your site they see

http://www.funoverfun.com/

so they have to remember the community part.

http://www.funoverfun.com/community/

i dont know what type of SEO or promotion your doing for your main site but you need to set it for both. its hard to find your forum with out a direct link. and some people might not even see it on your main site so they dont make it.

maybe adwords would be good for you depending how much you want to spend to get the place going. im sure you can get better help at EF's sister site adminfusion.com .

a paid posting service might help but short term. that service is meant to help with the little traffic you have. your forum doesnt seem to have any right now.

The software you are using is horrible no offense. I have found that my secret weapon is friends and groups on myspace.
