Maybe do some collections of designs and offer them free with a link in the footer to your site. This worked pretty well for a forum I knew. Also try to make something really great like a design worm where each member ads on to anothers graphic.
That is the yaxay worm. I like what they did a lot it looks really great. If you can pull something like this off especially if it is longer and of good quality It can gain some attention of other design forums.
Good Luck

A competition we are doing at the moment is that anyone who brings the most acctive members will get 1 years free web hosting. That seems to work at the moment.
Just advertise it like other sites. If you really want your visitors to convert to signups though then the first thing that you will need to do is to get quite a few threads, posts and members so that your forums look active. If you don't have many of these 3 then all your advertising would probably not do much good as no one hardly wants to signup to a forum that has no activity unless they just want to do 1 or 2 posts to leave their link which is mainly done a spammy way.
you all missing one of the best ways to make money. Social networking and joint ventures
make friends in close niches to you but not the exact same and work out a deal with someone with big list of people and get them to promote your product for a split in commision.
This works like a charm and has been my little success tip.
sir john reese bows down to this technique as well. If you go out of you way to do this it is a little bit of extra work and phoneing (yes I should suggest you phone them) them not emailing and get to know the person first.
you do this properly and you will get a good reputation and more money for hardly much work.
hope this helps

Forums can be tricky to advertise. Without a good members base or without active discussions, it doesn't matter how much advertising you do as people will just leave.
Contests usually work pretty well for forums... members who post XXX amount of messages will receive XXX service or prize.
Ive always heard of people using paid posting services but the point of it i just dont get, maybe you should try it? But research it more before proceeding.
yeah do adwords on a smaller scale budget and then test and make sure your results are good....then go all out.
might take a bit of work but in the long run it will ensure your not throwing money down the toilet...and beware adwords can certainly do that to you....let the market tell you what they want to see and put that infront of them.
