I just recently acquired the directory site Rails411.com, which kind of died out on us because of the lack of promotion. Now I'm trying to get it started again. How should I advertise a directory?

Give away number of free links this is just for a good start.
Submit it to Webmaster Sites
Google , Yahoo , MSN with directories keyword

How should I promote my site through SEO? I am getting a new directory design made as we speak, which should stick a few visitors when i do get started. Any other suggestions?

- posting forums
- start blog
- submit articles to articles directories

1)Directory Submission
2)Forum Posting
3)Submit Articles to Articles Directories
4)Emails to VIPs

you should drop by directory-owners.com. Lots of good stuff and some of the questions/ideas and concerns you have are pretty common. You might just pick up a "nugget" or two.
