Has anyone had any luck with e-mail lists or opt-in lists, I keep considering useing them but the cost of good list (if there is one) can be expensive and I wondered if its worth the cost.

Hell Yea it converts!!! The key is hitting the inbox and having great data (optin list).

But data is the main part of it, getting thur the filters are a piece of cake

Sounds like you have experience, El-Plaga!
I'm not sure what you mean by "hitting the inbox"? Does this mean getting through the filters?
And having great data, I don't know what you mean by that?

Email promotion is extremely powerful - however, your success is almost totally contingent on the quality of the list - and those types of lists can't be found via a purchased mailing list from a spam warehouse.

You have two options:

1) Build your own list - the sooner you start, the quicker your list will materialize - develop an opt-in sign-up on your site (giving away a "free report" or "free course" works the best). Use a service like aweber.com to automate the process - autoresponders rule!

2) Joint venture with somebody who has already started a list targeted to the demo/niche you're trying to reach with your offer. Offer revenue sharing, a flat advertising fee or a combo of both.

Don't waste your time buying lists from spam mills - you'll sure to be disappointed by the results.

Anybody know of some free e-mail extracting and sending software that they've had experience with?

E-mail Extracting: Software which pulls email addies from given URL, and several link layers deep
E-mail Sending: Software which can then handle the management of sending emails to the extracted list.

80-

Not the way to go - that's spam at its worst - your response rate will be next to zero and you'll wind up getting yourself blacklisted.

Do it the right way by setting up an autoresponder on your sites - aweber is a great pay service which manages campaigns wonderfully.

For a FREE solution - phplist (phplist.com) is decent

Why is it spam at the worst if I'm targeting my receiving-audience very carefully, making sure that only relevant promotions are delivered?

Good luck, Diglet - PM me if you need any help setting up your autoresponders.

80 - any unsolicited email campaign is a bad idea. You'll find that the response rate is dismal and you won't last long, you will get blacklisted at some point.

I'm sure you get quite a bit of spam, like we all do - do you ever pay attention to any of it that you didn't request or you're not familiar with the sender?

On top of all that, it's just bad ethics - spam in any form detracts from true marketing efforts - don't contribute to making it more difficult for your legit campaigns.

So if I want to market a certain product/service/contest for a certain niche I'd have to first create a website for that niche, then get a userbase and then email them?

Yes - that's the way to develop your own list. Take 3-6 months to solely concentrate on building your list before actively monetizing- offer a free course to collect emails.

Another approach is to find established sites/marketers in your niche and JV with them to attach your offer to their email campaigns.

I know it doesn't sound as easy as buying a list or scraping emails with a bot - but it's going to be 1000x more effective for you to do it the correct way.

Ya, most list that are sold are whored out. Now there are some guys that i know personally that sale great data. But its pricey, but well worth it if you know to email market.

You will find some places where you can get data for like $39 but think about how many other people are hitting those emails. You might gain some profit from it, But not worth it.

Gather your own, alot of good ways have been mentioned above!

Do you have links/HTML in the emails? If so, you're going to run into spam detection issues.

Yes, 80Degreeze that is spam because you are getting the emails and sending them your newsletters or emails that they didn't even want or ask for. If the person who receives an email didn't want to receive the stuff in the first place or signup to anything to receive the stuff then it is spam.

Anyway, good luck and all the best.

Personally I have never tried email marketing.

Hey Jason,

You'll need to have double opt-in permission - basically, you'll need to be in the recipient's "safe" list which usually occurs when they request your mailing, then you send a confirmation and they reply with an affirmation mail.

Outlook, Yahoo, GMail, etc. will then allow your HTML to hit the Inbox.
