I've been operating a site for over a year now. It's grown steadily, but lately things have become a little stagnant. Here are the stats for the past 5 months:
Apr '07: 51,327 visitors / 69,449 pageviews
Mar '07: 55,478 visitors / 79,827 pageviews
Feb '07: 38,142 visitors / 52,042 pageviews
Jan '07: 32,646 visitors / 46,329 pageviews
Dec '07: 26,526 visitors / 39,402 pageviews
Here are the steps I've taken to make this site valuable to the reader:
At least one page of new content posted each day. Lately I've been shooting for 3 pages.
Most of the content is short blog posts that center on a link to another blog or site, containing a link, a quote, and my personal take on the subject. I always make sure the original content in each post outweighs what's been quoted or paraphrased.
About twice a month, I post feature-length how-to articles.
RSS feed is offered, as well as e-mail subscription.
Each morning, I roll through my RSS reader and collect material for new posts. During this process, I click through to any article that interests me, and leave an insightful, on-topic comment.
The subject matter of the site is computers and technology. Everything is written with the average person in mind.
On the technical side of things, the code to content ratio is good, I'm using meta tags and headline tags, and the title of each page is the headline of the article. Both an HTML sitemap and an XML sitemap are implemented.
I do realize that traffic has nearly doubled since December, but I can't help but think of all the SEO and SEM sites that talk about exponential growth. For a site that's 13 months old, it would seem like there should be something more happening. Am I right, or am I just thinking greedily? Is my site stagnant, or do I have it all wrong? Being primarily a programmer and content producer, I have to say that I don't have the best understanding of promotion, marketing, and seo.
What are some new things I can do to boost traffic? I have tried paid advertising through both Stumble Upon and Google AdWords, however traffic has always disappeared the moment the campaign was depleted.
