What we can learn from the Wii

As you may or may not know I'm a big Nintendo fan and have everything from the NES to the Wii, I don't play games much these days but I'll always have a soft spot for the great Nintendo.

Anyway I have been thinking about the huge success they are having with their Wii console and thought how it can relate to Internet Marketing

The Wii's success teaches us many things...

Be Creative
The Wii boasts many unique features compared to the other consoles. While 360 and PS3 are very similar to past offerings, Wii completely shook up the gaming world and have emersed players in a way we could only dream before. From the unique motion controllers, remote shaped controller, to the new genres of games now possible, Nintendo made it very easy for others to sit up and take notice.

Bottomline Be creative and add unique features to your product, and people will take notice.

Benefits
The Wii conbtains many features however what you will find is most of them are all gaming related features. The motion controller, rumble feature, 24hr online option, Virtual Console downloads etc are all features which complement its original purpose - gaming. Where PS3 and 360 are struggling at is they force buyes to pay extra for features which they dont really need. Things like Blue Ray, internal hard drives, HD graphics etc do not enhance the gameplay experience. (well HD might but I dont see it as much of an improvement). Same thing can be said about the PS2 where it had a DVD player. Sure it was a selling point but video game consoles are to play.....VIDEO GAMES not movies! Adding DVD playback doesn't make it a better "gaming system" so why add it?

Bottomline So with your products dont add fluff and extras for the sake of being able to raise your price or increase the value of your product when it really doesnt add to it.

Costing
The Wii is set at a mass market price for a video game console and is selling the best at the moment. The PS3 is selling at the slowest rate because apart from many problems, one of its biggest ones are it simply costs too much for a video game console. The general public doesn't see the PS3's price is worth it and rightly so.

Bottomline You don't need to be the cheapest to succeed but don't overprice your product beyond what most can afford. Sure you can have $700 products if you wish, but unless you can make the public believe it's worth the price, you won't sell many

Huh?

Is all the above the reason Wii has for the past 10 years and will for the forseeable future continue to be dead last among console producers in marketshare?

I think it will be more successful simply for the matter of price. Consoles are increasing a lot in price, making it hard to affors unless you are really into it.

The price isnt the reason its succeeding, the Gamecube was way cheaper and that didnt do well.
