Now promotion of 90 % of sites is made by means of participation in blogrolls. What is the difference between this system and link exchange?
In general, there is not big difference. The question is - whether Google will punish those who participate in blogrolls the same as it acted with participants of links exchange?

We don't totally rely on blogrolls alone. We don also link exchanges, social nets, etc.

The key is getting targetted traffic IMO. Whatever your means are, so long as you get targetted traffic from it - then you are on the right path!

I always opt for PPC, paid targetted back links, forum posting for drawing the right traffic and also suggest the same.

Links exchanges does not really hurt your site, as long as you reciprocate links to relavant sites in your niche and you stay away from bad neighborhoods.
