A simple equation for an effective marketing campaign :

Good content (info,service or product) + SEO + PPC, Paid back links, Forum posts to similar niche, banners, etc. = Great traffic and more targeted traffic!

IMO, opting for paid ways contribute well to a good marketing mix especially at getting targeted traffic. In reality, getting 10 targeted traffic is better that 100 random traffic. Getting just mere random traffic doesn't constitutes your site's success - it's the conversion you get from your traffic. Getting traffic is just the first step, offering the right stuff to your visitors and conversion should be utmostly considered.

To sum up, SEO is great for the long run and should't be left out. This is a long process and wouldn't always give you immediate results. Premium ways (PPC, paid links, banner, etc) for faster generation of targeted traffic especially if you have time constraints.

You're right. So many new webmasters look at how many people they get to their site, and not where they come from.

SE is always priority in my book, and the best way to achive this is with unique handwritten content - it's free targetted traffic. PPC can work too but only if you have a decent place to send them and a budget you can play with.

"Forum posts on similar niche"?? That will get you booted at many forums, certainly would at mine.

SEO is a long term campaign. So a continuous monitoring is required.

Lols, I did not mean that you spam your way in those forums to promote your site

Being able to contribute construtively to the discussions and help out others will get your sig links noticed rather than to just drop your links in your posts - and surely this will get you banned. Most forums also have a place where they let you advertise your sites as long as you behave properly

While targeted content is obviously the most valuable, keep in mind that not all offers require targeted content. When shoemoney was doing PPC for ringtones, one of his best keywords was "aol". Pure volume.

There are different ways and techniques in doing PPC. It depends on what niche you are in and most importantly - the service or product you offer to your visitors! I once bought a Wristwatch after I clicked on a PPC ad for World of Warcraft, LOLS! Simply because I found the product being sold enticing enough to spend some bucks on!
