1- Use Text stickers (your url) on your car and ask if your friends/family will do the same

2- Make flyers and leave them at public places like Mc Donalds

3- Make stickers and attach them to stoplights, streetlights, trashcans etc.( at your own risk)

4- Living in the city or know somebody else? great, now you can have a flag or BIG flyer in front of your window

5- Leave some cd's behind public places with the text confidential, people will take a peak at it(this one is pretty expensive but you can convert into other ideas, like small gift package with only a note of your url)

T-shirts work really well for offline advertising.

These are good ideas but only if your site can grow virally. You would have to get a few people interested so they could tell other people. They wouldn't work for most of us user's average content sites but if you have a really great idea, good ways to get the ball rolling.

yellowDuck, this technically isn't offline, but email friends and ask them to forward your url to the list of people they usually send all of their jokes.

I think I said this somewhere before, but...

make up/purchase bookmarks with your site advertisement.

Insert bookmarks into books, magazines, etc. at bookstores, libraries, grocery stores, news stands - where ever possible, in publications specific your niche topic.

targeted marketing at a fraction of the cost.

Works wonders...

Not a pro by a long shot but we noticed more traffic locally and from out of state when we (just) did this: Get involved in a charity or community service project! Besides making a difference in the world and making you a local hero, it gives you a chance to put your url on posters around town, get free publicity in the paper, and though it starts locally, everyone who sees it knows someone in another state who might find your site interesting. If you have a tell-a-friend link on your site it makes it easy to send it along. But please - be sincere about whatever project you choose!

Some great ideas!

We've had success with a combination online/offline promotion where we have held contests and used hats/t-shirts as the prizes. Works as an online promotion and then when the winner gets it they wear it and its suddenly an offline advertisement.
