expired websites = websites whose domains names lease were not renewed.

Classified Ads are mentioned. That is nice, especially if you are selling physical products.

Some classifieds site allows digital products also. Check them out!

At what point is it beneficial to place banner ads on your site? Is there a certain amount of traffic a site should be getting in order to be profitable?

Expired sites already have backlink from other site to the site so there's traffic coming in without you bringing in traffic.
But you still need to do more to bring more traffic though.
